A focus group of members convened with State President Eileen Little and 1st Vice President Royce Boyd recently to discuss the future of our state organization. One of the many suggestions offered was that “we need to DO more.” Taking advantage of the location of our upcoming state convention in Lancaster, PA, we saw an opportunity to “DO more” with two unique local organizations that respond to basic human needs and work for peace and justice in communities worldwide.
For our 2023 Purposeful Seminar DKG will become part of the stories of the Mennonite Central Committee and Ten Thousand Villages.
At Ten Thousand Villages, we will learn how opportunities for women artisans in developing countries earn income by bringing their products and stories to their markets through long-term, fair trading relationships. You will have an opportunity to shop with intention for ethically sourced handcrafted wares and to share in the joy of empowering women to break the cycle of generational poverty.
After an included continental breakfast at the Wyndham, Kitchen Kettle Village in Intercourse, PA will be our morning stop for the Ten Thousand Villages store as well as all that Lancaster County has to offer – homemade baked goods, jams and jellies, good food with unexpected touches, one-of-a-kind shops, and a working canning kitchen. Lunch here will be on your own.
In the afternoon, we will arrive at the Mennonite Central Committee headquarters in Akron, PA where we will learn about their relief and development efforts to help uprooted and vulnerable people in 45 countries. We will actually participate in the activities related to this work by volunteering our time on projects in which they have the most immediate need at the time. During the evening presentation before our visit, you will select the volunteer job that fits you best. Look elsewhere in the Keystonian to see the list of materials that we will be donating for the Relief and School Kits that through the convention attendees.
The cost for the Seminar of Purpose includes:
Make your reservation at the Wyndham for June 20th, one day before the State Convention begins. You will receive the convention rate.
