Scholarship Recipient
Amy Radford is pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing degree through Lindenwood University. She is the High School lead teacher at Faith Mountain Christian Academy and a 6th-12th grade teacher of English. Amy is the recipient of two scholarships. She is receiving the Marian Spitzer Robling Scholarship which is awarded to an outstanding woman pursuing a master’s degree within her first three years of membership in the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. She is also receiving the Margaret J Wolf Award which is given to a woman pursuing graduate study. Margaret (Margee) and Vincent Wolf regularly attend the Sunday Brunch. Margee was always delighted to be able to present the award given in her name to the honored recipient and share inspirational words with all in attendance at the brunch. In January 2020, Barb Tobias had received word that Margee was seriously ill and Hospice was called. To date, we have not received any further information. It seems appropriate that we honor Margee with the presentation of this scholarship to Amy.
Enrichment Grant Recipients
Louise Garverick of Betta Kappa Chapter received a grant to travel on a 15 day educational cruise which will begin with a pre-cruise to Bergen, Norway. Her 15 day cruise from Norway will stop at ports in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Portugal and conclude in Barcelona, Spain. The daily seminars on the ship are informative and educational. Louise will keep a daily journal and take photographs as she pursues her research of the different cultural tastes of each region. She will use that information to create a picture book documenting her trip.
Colleen Kane of Alpha Zeta Chapter received a grant for a Road Scholar tour of the Netherlands and Belgium tulip farms, gardens, and art museums. Colleen presently is a first grade teacher in the Northeast Bradford School District. Her trip will immerse her in historical events that shaped the countries through visits to museums to view works of masters of the Dutch Golden Age, to tulip farms and gardens that exemplify the significance of flowers in Dutch life, and to learn about the water management system that reclaimed the land with windmills. Colleen will share her knowledge with school children, garden clubs and her DKG sisters.
Linda Konczal-Evans of Theta Chapter received a grant to travel to London, England. Linda and her sister always said “when we retire” we will visit England together. Linda, however, lost her sister when they were one year of their retirement. She now will travel to England to honor and in memory of her sister by taking her niece and her daughter to visit the historic sites.
Deborah McMillin of Alpha Sigma received a grant to acquire a “Land to Table” experience in Aruba. Deborah presently provides educational talks and tours at a local farm/orchard teaching concepts of farm-to-table to children and adults. The summer course features a different food each week. The children and the adults learn what is involved in getting the food from the farm to their dinner plates. In Aruba, Deborah will tour country estates and working farms to observe how the inhabitants have learned how to develop the barren volcanic land into a growing agricultural area that is dependent of what is grown on their farms.
Ann Peay of Alpha Omicron Chapter received a grant for a horseback riding experience at the Lipizzan Riding Center in Slovenia. For Ann, this is a dream come true. She will be touring the original Lipizzan breeding farm where she will learn about the workings of the farm and view dressage demonstrations by students and instructors. Ann feels that her experience at the Lipizzan Center will inspire her to work towards her next dressage level of riding. She will also visit the town of Bovec where her maternal grandparents lived to research her ancestral heritage.
Karen Prince of Alpha Omicron Chapter received a grant to travel to Northern England and the Southwest Coast of Ireland. Karen will revisit these two countries after 26 years. This time she will tour the countries by car and hiking, rather than by bus, to personally experience the culture and natural beauty of the areas. In England, she plans to visit horticultural gardens, castles, a national park, and partake of the local fare in the small towns and villages. In Ireland, Karen will hike the many trails to view the rugged coastline, beaches, mountains, cliffs, and waterfalls while enjoying the fresh seafood and local Irish music in the many establishments. Her goals are to enrich and appreciate the culture, history, people, and landscapes of these two areas; and improve her own planning and organizational skills of journal writing and use of the camera to record her journey which she will be able to use in planning future travel excursions.
Beverly Utz of Beta Kappa Chapter received a grant to visit Australia, New Zealand, and the Fiji Islands to experience the culture and history of these areas. She will visit a local school in Auckland and is planning to donate school supplies to students and teachers during school visits in the Fiji Islands. Beverly will visit the Opera House, a signature landmark in Sydney as well as other historical points of interest in Australia and New Zealand. Being a member of the local arts council, she plans to enhance her skills and support her love of photography, technology, and history to prepare a PowerPoint presentation utilizing the pictures from her trip.
Deborah Yargar-Reed of Beta Kappa Chapter received a grant to offset her personal expenses as a chaperone of an educational trip with high school students through Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand March 2021. This is Deborah’s sixth trip abroad as a chaperone with high school students. The tour will include museums, river cruises, walking tours, and the meals will be tailored to capture the ethnic flavor of the regions visited. Deborah will use the knowledge she gains from this trip to work with her “fine arts team” to organize a culminating Cultural Arts event for the elementary students’ study of Asia.
Margaret Zorn of Alpha Delta Chapter received a grant to embark on a riverboat tour of Northern Italy traveling from Milan to Venice. Margie’s travels will enable her to experience the historical and architectural wonders of cathedrals, opera houses, museums, and palaces. Her riverboat cruise will take her to fishing villages to harvest mussels, to markets to participate in a pasta making workshop, to experience the charm of lace making traditions, to craft demonstrations at a glass factory, and to learning the history of Venetian painting. She is truly a ‘lifelong learner’ and is looking forward to experiencing the culture, history, and everyday life of Northern Italy.
